First Look: Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Inherent Vice’; Maya Rudolph Joins Cast

Paul Thomas Anderson / Inherent Vice

Just nine months after The Master made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, Paul Thomas Anderson is already plugging away on his next feature Inherent Vice. Shooting on the Thomas Pynchon adaptation recently began in Los Angeles, with a sprawling lineup including Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Sean Penn, and many more.

The first pics from the set offer a look at Phoenix, who as pot-smoking P.I. Doc Sportello is rocking mutton chops and a Panama hat. In addition, they reveal one more name on the already star-studded cast list — Anderson’s partner Maya Rudolph. Hit the jump to check them out.

The Daily Mail posted the photos.

The ’60s-set psychedelic noir sees Sportello drawn into a bizarre case when an ex (Katherine Waterston) suddenly resurfaces in his life. The job puts him in contact with all manner of colorful characters including, in the book, “surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, a tenor sax player working undercover, an ex-con with a swastika tattoo and a fondness for Ethel Merman, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists.”

Aside from Phoenix, Waterston, and Wilson, who’ll play saxophonist Coy Harlingen, none of the actors’ roles have been revealed. However, The Playlist points out that Rudolph appears to be a nurse working with Dr. Buddy Tubeside, who injects his patients with vitamin B-12 energy shots (yes, like in that episode of Mad Men). Somewhat surprisingly, Inherent Vice marks Rudolph’s first time appearing in any of Anderson’s films.

Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, and Kevin O’Connor are among the many other actors signed on for Anderson’s film. And assuming Anderson is staying faithful to Pynchon’s source material, we can probably expect even more names to drop in as shooting continues. Inherent Vice is expected in theaters next year.
